Historical and Cultural Heritage of Shymkent
Historical and cultural monuments are classified into the following categories:
1.Archaeological monuments
2.Monuments of urban planning and architecture
3.Architectural ensembles and complexes
4.Sacred sites
5.Monuments of monumental art
As of today, 188 historical and cultural heritage sites have been officially registered in the city of Shymkent. Of these:
•    70 are archaeological monuments;
•    9 are monuments of urban planning and architecture;
•    3 are sacred sites;
•    106 are monuments of monumental art (monuments and busts).
Monuments of National Significance
Seven sites are included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Monuments of National Significance: Sairam (Isfidzhab) ancient settlement (8th–17th centuries), Mausoleum of Abdel-Aziz Bab (13th–18th centuries), Mausoleum of Ibrahim Ata (13th–18th centuries), Mausoleum of Khoja Salyk (13th–18th centuries), Mausoleum of Mirali Bab (13th–18th centuries), Mausoleum of Karashash Ana (12th–18th centuries), Khizr Minaret (19th century), Monuments of Local Significance. Eight sites are included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Local Significance: Palace of Metallurgists (mid-1950s),
Residential building (early 20th century), St. Nicholas Church (early 20th century),
School building (mid-1950s), Shymkent ancient settlement (3rd–2nd centuries BC – 19th century), Royal burial mound (1st–4th centuries), Burial mound complex (4 mounds) (1st millennium BC), Single burial mound (1st millennium BC).
The remaining historical and cultural heritage sites currently included in the preliminary register will be reviewed by the Commission for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments established under the Akimat. Following consideration, the issue of granting them the appropriate status will be addressed, with their subsequent planned inclusion in the State List.
