The State Municipal Enterprise “Association of Museums of the City of Shymkent” welcomed Candidate of Historical Sciences and numismatic scholar P.N. Petrov on a special research visit.
During the visit, a meeting was held with the management of the Association of Museums of the City of Shymkent. The parties reached an agreement on providing mutual support in the scientific study of the coin collection preserved in the museum funds.
Numismatics holds a special place in historical and archaeological research. Coins are valuable historical sources that provide important information about the economic, political and cultural relations of different periods. Through the work of numismatic specialists, many artifacts containing valuable information about the past can be scientifically attributed and introduced into academic research.
Today, there is a significant need for professional numismatists in Kazakhstan. P.N. Petrov has made a notable contribution to the development of numismatic studies, including the study of the numismatic heritage of Central Asia, through his scientific research and scholarly work.
During his visit, P.N. Petrov examined the collection of coins preserved in the museum funds of the Association of Museums of the City of Shymkent and paid particular attention to coins that have not yet undergone comprehensive scientific research.
In the future, the collection is planned to undergo a comprehensive study, including clarification of its chronology and attribution. The research findings will be introduced into academic circulation, while the most significant artifacts will subsequently be presented to museum visitors.
It should be noted that the museum funds of the State Municipal Enterprise “Association of Museums of the City of Shymkent” currently preserve more than 500 coins and coin collections.
Their chronological range extends from the 7th–8th centuries, the period of the Turkic and Turgesh eras, to the 19th century, covering the periods of the Kokand Khanate and the Russian Empire. These artifacts are also connected with the history of China, Iran, Central Asia and European countries through the trade and economic relations that developed along the Great Silk Road.
The scientific study of the numismatic heritage will contribute to a deeper understanding of the history of Shymkent and the wider region, provide new historical data, and support the preservation and promotion of this valuable cultural heritage.
